5.50OZ ORGANIC RAW DENIM - INDIGO
Raw denim is a denim that wasn’t prewashed or specially treated, making it in its most natural state. We love it for its unique look, as denim will fade over time, creating a unique colour and a washed-out pattern. This denim is stiff at first and will soften over time to become the perfect denim for the person wearing it.
Here are a few tips and tricks to love your denim to a maximum:
- Bathe your denim prior to putting it in the wash. Since it wasn’t industrially washed, it may release a good amount of dye. We also want it to shrink a little bit right away rather than once your project is finished. A good soak in cold water is advised instead of putting it in the washer directly as the latter could cause wrinkles and get discoloured unevenly in the creases. Soaking will help eliminate a first amount of dye in excess.
- If you want to prewash in the machine, after its bath, make sure to unfold your fabric so as to not leave any creases. To avoid such problem and reduce wrinkling, you can also separate your yardage in smaller pieces depending on your pattern and wash them individually. Cold water and a small quantity of detergent are preferred if you don’t want to lose too much dye. WARNING! Make sure to clean your machine thoroughly before your next load of whites if you don’t want to end up with Tie-Dye panties! ;)
- Once the fabric is washed, hang your denim to dry. Avoid the dryer! If your denim is wrinkled and still damp, use the iron with plenty of steam to minimize it.
- The great promoters of raw denim avoid washing it at a maximum in order to see the natural ageing of this beautiful fabric. If you want to remove bacteria from your denim between uses, you can put it in the freezer!
